21A – Reading Reflection No. 2
ENT3003
Chris Ward
Mindset by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D.
1)
What was the general theme or argument of the book?
·
This book is about the two mindsets people tend to have. The fixed mindset, where you believe things
are the way they are and unable to develop or change with work. The other is the growth mindset, a much more
desirable trait, which is when you believe that talents and intelligence can be
developed with the right amount of work.
2) How did
the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in
ENT 3003?
·
The theme of this book is all about development and taking failure
as a lesson rather than defeat. Having owned
and failed in my own business, I understand the mindset it takes to learn from
that experience. This book helped show me that, for the most part, I have a
growth mindset and why that is so important to my further development. Every business entrepreneur should read this
book to help them understand the different mindsets and the drawback of a fixed
mindset.
3) If you had
to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would
that exercise involve?
· There are
many examples of different exercising in this book to help determine which
mindset you are in as well as examples of why the growth mindset is
better. They involve a series of
questions to determine how you think of certain events. Then point out how you
could think of it differently and the benefits if you are in a fixed mindset.
4) What was
your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words,
what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
·
While reading the book, I kept thinking that I was both fixed and
growth minded and was trying to figure out how to fix it. Towards the end of the book the author
finally revealed that most people are like me. She also pointed out the best
way to compensate for the fixed mindset is to recognize the situations that provoke
it and adapt accordingly.
Hi Chris,
ReplyDeleteI wish I read this book! From what you wrote about it, it seems like you've learned a lot about people's mentality on growth and success. It's even more interesting that most people are a mix of both; people like to think that they have free will, and I think it's what makes a great entrepreneur.
