27A – Reading Reflection No. 3

Chris Ward

1) You read about an entrepreneur: Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, Ashlee Vance
·       What surprised you the most? There wasn’t much that surprised me about Elon, I have been following him for a while now
·       What about the entrepreneur did you most admire? His big ideas, most people are happy just to make money in business.  Elon is changing the world.
·       What about the entrepreneur did you least admire? Elon does display erratic behavior in public.
·       Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it? He has had many failures from being forced out of his own companies to his rockets exploding.  Elon keeps at though, Space X has now launched rockets, one yesterday, and Tesla is becoming profitable.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited? Elon handles failure like an entrepreneur should, learn from it, correct the mistakes and try again.
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
1.     With your rockets exploding during launch, how did you handle that failure? I am curious to understand how he handled such a public display of his company’s failure.
2.     How long do you think it will be before Tesla is developing fully Autonomous cars? This is exciting and scary, and I am just curious about his thoughts on his cars interacting with normal drivers.

5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion? I believe he would say to “stick to it, learn, and adapt”, I agree in many ways but not everyone has the resources he does so it’s not as easy for most.

  1. Hi Chris,
Elon Musk is a fascinating character that we are still seeing develop. It is strange to be living at the same time as someone like Musk that is making so many advances for electronic sustainable travel and is looking to explore space as well. While I can’t argue that he is definitely making progress towards a greener future, he does have some PR issues with all of his fumbles in interviews and such. On some level it does make him more personable, but he also has made some inappropriate comments. Should this stop us from benefiting from his work?

  2. Chris, I loved the questions you would ask Elon, as I am also curious now. He has showed he is quite the entrepreneur throughout all of these years, not letting anything bring him down. I would also say he handles public failure like a beast, not allowing anyone’s opinions to affect him. When he was first creating Tesla, people did not even believe fully electric cars were a possibility, and he proved them wrong. Thus, I have a lot of confidence in him and look up to him as an entrepreneur. We should all handle failure as eloquently as Elon Musk does.

21A – Reading Reflection No. 2 ENT3003 Chris Ward Mindset by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D. 1) What was the general theme or argument of the book? ·       This book is about the two mindsets people tend to have.   The fixed mindset, where you believe things are the way they are and unable to develop or change with work.   The other is the growth mindset, a much more desirable trait, which is when you believe that talents and intelligence can be developed with the right amount of work. 2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003? ·       The theme of this book is all about development and taking failure as a lesson rather than defeat.   Having owned and failed in my own business, I understand the mindset it takes to learn from that experience. This book helped show me that, for the most part, I have a growth mindset and why that is so import...

18A – Create a Customer Avatar

18A – Create a Customer Avatar ENT3003 Chris Ward A coffee shop patron…..could be anybody or everybody, but who are the repeat customers or regular customers.   I believe they would be the working class or college students.   The traits of this person are difficult to define.   The only thing they all have in common is coffee. To provide more detail I would have to single out a particular person, but I believe the best part of my business is that it is truly for anyone. I am the customer, everything about me could be true of any of my customers.   You are my customer; you have everything or nothing in common with my other customers.   We all want coffee though!
